Virginia R. Rollefson Environmental Leadership Scholarship
The Virginia R. Rollefson Environmental Leadership Scholarship recognizes outstanding contributions by a high school junior or senior residing in the Lower Connecticut River Valley for participation in a program, project, or activity that benefits preservation, conservation, restoration or environmental education. One $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a student who demonstrates leadership and initiative. Eligible students must reside in Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham , East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Middlefield, Middletown, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Portland, or Westbrook. The scholarship must be used for qualified tuition, books, room and board or supplies. Employees, trustees, and committee members and their family members of The Rockfall Foundation are not eligible to apply.
Selection of scholarship recipients will be made on the basis of the credentials of the applicant, including:
- Demonstrated leadership and initiative in promoting conservation, preservation, restoration, or environmental education
- Successful participation in a program, project, or activity to benefit conservation, preservation, restoration, or environmental education
- The written recommendation of a teacher or someone familiar with the candidate’s program, project, or activity
- A personal interview to determine applicant’s knowledge of the program, project or activity, and the candidate’s motivation and character
Applications for the next scholarship award are due by March 1, 2019.
The scholarship is named in honor of former Executive Director of The Rockfall Foundation, Virginia R. “Ginny” Rollefson, who retired in 2010 after 24 years with the Foundation. The award honors her long service to the Foundation, her enthusiasm, and her belief that we all benefit when young people are actively engaged in making their communities a better place to live.
