How will Transportation and Tourism change Middlesex County during the next decade?

The symposium will focus on how the economy will impact the environment in Middlesex County and how towns can meet the anticipated challenges over the next decade.

Who Should Attend:
Local elected and appointed officials, land use planners, developers, architects, attorneys, realtors, educators; Planning, Zoning, Wetlands and Appeals board and commission members; and others concerned with effective community planning.

Scheduled Speakers:
Joseph F. Marie, Commissioner, State of Connecticut Department of Transportation; What changes can we expect in the next decade?

Fred V. Carstensen, University of Connecticut Professor of Economics and Director, Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis ; The economic impact of transportation and tourism in Middlesex County.

Donna Simpson, Executive Director Eastern Connecticut Tourism District ¬ Mystic Country; Successful Tourism: How important are natural resources, cultural resources and public/private partnerships?

Craig della Penna, Executive Director of Northeast Greenway Solutions, General Manager of Central Highland Conservancy, Innkeeper, and Realtor in Northampton, Massachusetts; Rail Corridors: Linear Parks, Tourism and Development.

Recipients of Rockfall Foundation grants awarded in the spring of 2008 will provide table top displays describing their environmental education or planning projects.

Symposium brochures will be mailed in early September, 2008. Advance registration is required, and because space is limited, registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.


Symposia & Workshops

The Annual Rockfall Symposia & Workshops are educational programs designed to promote well-informed planning and decision-making so that growth in Middlesex County can exist in harmony with the environment.

Past symposia have focused on issues such as

  • open space preservation
  • balancing conservation and development
  • water related resource conservation and development
  • land use and water quality
  • greenways
  • protecting unique lands and water quality in the lower Connecticut River Valley
  • protecting regional character
  • open space land management
  • changing wildlife populations, and
  • building better communities.

 

Workshops

The Rockfall Foundation also offers workshops, sometimes as a co-sponsor in cooperation with other organizations. Workshops strive to meet the needs and interests of the community in response to issues concerning the balance of environmental conservation with development. These 1 – 3 hour educational programs usually focus on a specific area of interest.

Past workshops have focused on such issues as

  • greenway development
  • open space property management
