Greening Kids

Engaging children and young adults in learning about the natural world remains at the heart of Rockfall’s mission. We believe that the most effective way to encourage long-term stewardship of the county’s natural resources is to influence the next generations of stewards.

Rockfall supports and promotes the work of those providing children and young adults with hands-on experiences that will often translate into life-long appreciation and care for our natural world.

  • Rockfall grant recipients work with children and schools and fund internships for students at local universities and colleges.
  • Each year, the foundation sponsors family hikes at local parks and conservation areas.
  • Virginia R. Rollefson Youth Certificates of Appreciation are awarded to county high school students to recognize their accomplishments in environmental stewardships and efforts as encouragement for other young people.

Everyone Outside & Wadsworth Legacy Properties
In conjunction with the foundation’s 75th Anniversary in 2010, Rockfall provided grant awards to educators in county schools to partner with the innovative, county-based Everyone Outside program to create a standard-based curriculum for the Wadsworth Legacy properties. These properties comprise Wadsworth Falls State Park and Long Hill Estate, both of which were once owned and then donated to the county by Rockfall founder, Clarence S. Wadsworth. Included are classroom materials, interactive web maps and a docent program to encourage and assist classes to visit and explore these remarkable local resources of natural beauty and significance.
