Even more than the other environmental achievements of the 1970s-the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the pesticide control Act-the Endangered Species Act draws anger: It doesn’t work. It costs too much. It puts people out of work. It puts animals before humans.

“But our understanding of ecology, epidemiology and economics has changed since the Endangered species Act was signed…for much of our evolutionary history, it was man versus man or man versus tiger. Now we’re up against a changing world—and in a sense we’re up against ourselves. We’re going to need every organism we can muster in the struggle.”  --J. Roman, Listed
